According to a 1998 report, the United Stated Department of Agriculture estimates that more than 300,000 wolfdogs exist in the United States. Because both Malamutes and wolves share a high prey drive, a Malamute-wolf mix requires training by owners not to view smaller creatures, including small children, as prey. However, wolves are more timid and scared of humans than most dog breeds, preferring to hide rather than become aggressive, which results in an increased difficulty to generalize the behavior of wolfdogs around humans.
