The typical American consumes about 3,400 milligrams of sodium daily, from sources including prepared and processed foods, condiments, and natural foods such as dairy products, vegetables, shellfish and meats, notes Mayo Clinic. People also take in sodium when they add salt to recipes and to food at the table. Ways to reduce sodium intake include using spices, herbs, citrus fruit zest and fruit juices as seasonings instead of salt when cooking or serving foods.
