The disability living allowance has two components: mobility and care. Beneficiaries may receive one of the components or both. The care component is for those who need attention or supervision from another person. The mobility component is for people with disabilities that affect their ability to walk outdoors.
DLA is a tax-free benefit and does not depend on the beneficiary's National Insurance contributions. The UK government has started replacing the DLA with Personal Independence Payment since April 8, 2013.
