What causes hyperactive bowel sounds

According to MedlinePlus, blocked blood vessels prevent the intestines from getting proper blood flow, which may lead to hyperactive bowel sounds. Hernias, tumors, adhesions or similar conditions may block the intestines to create a mechanical bowel obstruction, which may also cause hyperactive bowel sounds. Paralytic ileus stems from problems with the nerves and reduces their activity. Blood vessel blockage, bowel blockage, chemical imbalances like hypokalemia, infection, overexpansion of the bowel and trauma may cause reduced nerve activity.

MedlinePlus mentions that most of the conditions that cause hyperactive bowel sounds result in no harm and do not need treatment. However, the serious underlying causes such as blocked blood vessels, mechanical bowel obstruction and paralytic ileus merit a trip to a physician. MedlinePlus also recommends seeing a doctor when experiencing symptoms such as diarrhea, bleeding from the rectum, nonstop constipation, nausea and vomiting.
